FROM THE PASTOR

In July we as a denomination will hold probably one of the most important conventions our church has held in the last few decades. There will be voting regarding the restructuring of our church body and an election that will either support the work that has been done regarding this restructuring or will scrap the whole process and start over. There will be motions about our support or non-support of several milestone doctrinal items made by other denominations as well as making some statements of our own.

How does this affect us at Trinity. Well, for starters, I will be the pastoral delegate to this convention representing our circuit. I will be accompanied by a layman from Easton and we will represent our circuit to this convention. Hopefully, we will be representing you well and be a strong voice for our region. Secondly, the outcome of this convention will determine how we do business as a denomination for years to come. There will even be a preliminary motion to begin the process of updating our name as a church body. Most importantly, who our next synodical President will be could have far reaching effects on how we interact as a church with the world around us and even how we may engage each other. Www.lcms.org is the official website of the convention and you can follow the daily business with updates to that.

The dates of the convention are July 10- July 17. I would ask that you pray for those of us attending and especially for myself and my lay counterpart as we deliberate the motions and vote. It will be comforting to me to know that while I am there I will have the support of my Trinity family. It is also important that if you have concerns or opinions about what we will be voting on to let me know your thoughts as I prepare to leave for this convention.

I pray that you will keep me in your prayers as I attend and work for us at this monumental event in our history.

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE

The Church picnic is set for July 11, 2010.  Bring your own chicken and the rest of the meal will be furnished.  This annual event will be further advertised, so watch the bulletin and listen for announcements.

Set aside August 21, 2010 for a night at a Baysox baseball game!  Game time is 6:35pm and will be followed by fireworks.  Let Andy Bowers (443 262 6085) know if you are interested or sign up on the sheet on the Activities bulletin board in the Narthex.  If there's enough interest, we'll have a tailgate party in the parking lot of the stadium before the game.

WELLNESS WITH TLC

Nearly 46 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with some form of arthritis. And the number is projected to increase to 63 million by 2030. According to the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of these adults will have limited activity as a result.

“Most people with arthritis think there's nothing they can do about it - that's a myth," says Patience White, M.D., MA, chief public health officer of the Arthritis Foundation. “There's a lot you can do to relieve the pain and prevent arthritis from worsening.”

Here are some ways you can improve your day-to-day comfort level:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This month I want to give you a progress report on the work of some of our committees at Trinity beginning with the Scholarship Committee.  At the June 17th Council meeting the committee(Ralph Buckel, Tony Littlefield, and me) presented our proposal about disbursement of Scholarship funds.  In general, we agreed that fund recipients would include young people of college age pursuing a degree, church staff doing continuing education, and lay members attending workshops or District and Synod training sessions.  Application forms have been prepared and limits to fund disbursement have been suggested.  I will give more details as all of this is finalized through council vote.  It should be noted that in order to keep any scholarship gifts possible,  funds must be maintained, renewed, and increased.  Consider giving as free will to the scholarship fund or directing memorials to it in the future.

The Building Committee has continued its work, meeting each month.  For now we are not proceeding with the plan from the Indiana firm until we consider a plan from a more local architect which addresses congregational concerns about their plan.  There are also legal questions about their contract.  Most of our work these last 3 months has focused on the issue of the right of way and the access point to our property ---- and ultimately to our new church.  This has included talks with lawyers, surveyors, and State Roads officials.  In July we will look at more options from a surveyor, Bucky Nickerson, who is acting on information we received from State Roads, and which will allow us to draft a proposal to the State about gaining access to our property from Route 213.

To the congregation this must seem like a lot of wheel spinning ----- we think that too sometimes.  But it really is a process in which all parts must be addressed.  Even we did not realize all the parts that would appear and which we would need to consider both legally and practically.  We will continue to keep you informed and tell you that if you want deeper details, to ask one of the committee members.

Education Committee ended the current Sunday School year and has planned a wonderful Vacation Bible School for the children June 28 to July1.  (note the earlier date this year ------ time still from 6 to 8 pm).  Youth and Education did a wonderful Just for Kids FunFest on May 28th, and did their overnight camping trip in June.

Just a reminder.  The large parking lot we use across from church is owned by Dr. Pelczar, whose office is in the professional building there.  He has given us permission to use the larger space farther from his building on Sunday mornings.  It should be used only on Sundays as his liability covers only that time and because he leases spots to other professional and college workers.  Try to use our back lot behind church or Greenwood Avenue for parking on other occasions.  For other larger church functions that will require more parking, we will approach him to ask permission to use the lot additionally.
